_ Who is speaking
John F. Kennedy
_ Why was/is the speech important to society!
JFK 's presidential
inauguration was at a pinnacle of change in world history and
specifically
American history. The civil rights movement had begun about a decade ago.
rights of
every person were being reevaluated and the roles of individuals were yet to be
solidified. The
Greensboro sit-ins were the same year too. In addition, American has just
recently gained
their first commerical nuclear power plant. The world was at a new point in technology
and relations with other countries; allies and enemies. This speech is giving
confidence and
encouragement to the US citizens and a promise to the world of the striving for
peace.
_ Why do you feel it is important or interesting?
It is very important
because a key aspect of a presidential candidate is the ability to inspire and lead
the entire nation. JFK is coming into play at a point in history where everything
is changing and change is so new. War at any turn along with blacks and whites conflicting
with each other. JFK is speaking to the entire world and standing strong against
emissaries of evil, and is stilling confidence and optimism in allies.
_ What is the emotion, mood, tone, personality,
feeling of the speech?
There is a focus
on inspiration, in stilling confidence and optimism in the listener. The tone is
full of strong word.s and an intonation that goes from very loud. to very soft.
The personality comes from a leader, a man with vision and excitement for the words
coming out of his mouth. He is speaking and understands and firmly believes what
he is saying. This attitude adds to the power of his speech.
_ What is intonation, emphasis. what is loud,
stressed or soft. Where are there pauses!
There are many
pauses between almost every word of the speech becau.se of the stye thatJFK is trying
to achieve. JFK is focusing on words and emphasizing words such as:
Energy. faith.
devotion, we. fellow Americans. Ask not. you. These words are meant to
grab the audience
member's attention.
_ What do you FEEL should be loud or soft,
long pause or rushed?
I feel that words
such as ''light our country,'' ''freedom of man” and other finishing words
should be loud and slow while words such as " and so, my fellow Americans''
and which bring to this endeavor" should be faster and softer.
_ Is there a call to action? When
listening to it what are key/emphasized words?
Yes there is a
call to action. To go and do for the
country, to give back, to be apart of making the country the best it can in
this time of such change. The emphasis words are Faith, energy, devotion,
together, we, do.
_ How does it make you feel!
This speech inspires
me, and makes me want to be apart of the cause because it gives me
confidence in being
an American.
_ How do imagine that the audience felt?
I imagine that
being at the speech itself or listening on the radio only adds to the excitement
and inspiration of the speech itself.
